Answer ‘What,’ ‘Why,’ and ‘How’ Before Committing to a Project

Creating an excellent project charter is a science and an art. You can create a great project charter, only if you take time to answer these critical questions about “what, why, and how” of the projects. Getting answers to these questions will not only reduce the risks of your projects but also assists your team in achieving success. What, Why, and How of Project Management


This is the center point of your goal. In your project charter, you will not call this section “what,” instead, it will likely be called “scope.” Here, you must describe what the project team is trying to achieve. Define if you are modifying existing products or services and how the organization will be in a better position to meet the strategic objectives. When defining what the project will deliver, you must also state what it will not deliver. Listing “out of scope” items are also valuable.


Many project managers put this section before the ‘what.’ As a project manager, you must understand why this project is essential – what revenue it will bring and what new opportunities it will attract. The business case or problem statement is where you must describe it. Projects are often expensive and risky endeavors. Therefore, you must have a good reason to undertake one.


Here, you must describe how you will execute the project. Before leading a project, you must understand its execution process. “Think about the project lifecycle. Will, you and your team, use a predictive, traditional lifecycle such as the waterfall lifecycle? Will the team use a change-driven, agile approach?” says Harry Hall.
