How a Non-Tech CIO Can Be Relevant in the IT

Though having technical knowledge is necessary, a non-tech CIO is not an uncommon phenomenon nowadays. The percentage of non-IT CIOs have tripled over the years and is not going to decrease soon. In this article at CIO Dive, Daniel Sanchez Reina shares tips to encourage non-tech CIO aspirations despite a non-IT background.

Perks of Having Non-Tech CIO Aspirations

Not coming from a traditional IT setup allows the non-tech CIO to see the gaps that usually are invisible for CIOs with a strong technical backdrop. Here are the ways that a non-tech CIO can draw strength from their seemingly irrelevant background:

Learn the Team Priorities and Review Operations: Find out how IT is working from a business perspective in your initial tenure as a non-tech CIO. Have frequent meetings with your direct team and stakeholders to get the hang of the IT operations. Find out if IT is falling short of meeting organization requirements. Depending on that, hire or allocate resources, purchase the license of new tools, or drop budget-draining projects. Begin with the easier ones first to kickstart the transformational efforts.

Use Your Business Acumen: The perks of coming from a non-IT background is that you will not be tagged as a technology nerd. Stakeholders are more open to insights from a non-tech CIO that has better business know-how. While you are learning new IT terminologies, help other IT leaders understand finance, management, or operations. Explain how involving teams in strategic decision-making enables a better acceptance rate for new technologies, policies, or business directions. One word of caution: be humble with your approach.

Learn High-Level and Granular Views: Learn to have a high-level knowledge of the enterprise IT architecture. Meanwhile, you could have granular insights regarding new technologies that can disrupt your business. It will increase your technical knowledge and help channelize the team in the right direction.
