The project managers are not privileged to deal with only pleasant situations at work. Every day brings a new challenge or unforeseen circumstance for them.
In this article at Project-Management, Reshmi Sujesh explains the challenging role of project managers through a case study. The highlight of the incident is the smartness of a project manager to evaluate a problem and solve it gracefully.
The Case Study
A project manager receives an email from his release manager, right before the launch of his project, that all the deployments planned for the day are canceled due to production instability. The revised dates will be communicated soon.
It means the project manager has to plan the deployment again. Even for minor changes, replanning is mandatory. The project manager has to act fast as the business users will be onboarded in two weeks. Being a compliance project, the manager cannot extend the user’s onboarding.
The project manager is left with two options in this condition; one is to deploy the changes outside his segment release calendar. While the other is to convince the stakeholders to revise the date of deployment. So, the project manager opted for the first option. He prepared his case, tabled the exception, and got the approvals for an off window release.
The project was successfully delivered, and users were onboarded as per the date scheduled. Here is the prime learning from this case to deal with tough circumstances:
- Rise Above the Mark: Throughout the project life cycle, unexpected situations may arise. So, the project managers must remain open to adjustments. To tackle complicated cases, they need to rise above the mark and act upon it with a clear mindset.
- Do Not Lose Cool: Peaceful mind takes better decisions than a hyperactive one. To deal with rough weather, the project managers must remain calm and maturely analyze the situation. They can hold an open and transparent discussion with their seniors and subordinates to find better solutions.
- Right Attitude: Cribbing and complaining never bring any productive solution. Consider every situation as a learning opportunity to improve and influence the team. Your attitude may bring team collaboration and support.
