37 percent of CIOs in Gartner’s 2019 CIO Survey responded that they are already or will be working on AI. Introduction of AI will certainly bring changes to the way businesses function today and so will the job expectations. AI and CIO: Transforming Job Roles

While repetitive jobs can be easily taken up by the AI, it will gradually perform more complex jobs. Some CIO roles will remain unaltered like vendor management, budget estimation, use case creation, investment strategy, etc. However, you must move from being a traditional strategic visionary to a digital thinker. Following are the areas where AI can reform CIO functions:

Operational Processes: As a CIO, you need to work with legacy as well as emerging technologies simultaneously. Nonetheless, this type of integrations is more siloed than connected. While that will work for the time being, soon you must move forward with automation, improving end-to-end processes. With autonomic and cognitive technologies, you can identify, repair, and upgrade systems without much intervention. You can then move from a passive governor of management platforms to a more active role of a digital strategist.

Service Functions: With automation and AI, ticketing systems will become a thing of the past soon. To make that happen faster, empower your employees with on-demand IT services and the resultant role changes. Pay less attention to performance and ticketing KPIs. Instead, measure progress in customer or employee experience, organizational productivity, and new service market release time.

Employee Roles: After AI introduction, you no longer need to keep up employee morale when they are bogged down with monotonous work. As a CIO, your job would be to open avenues so that the employees can explore new skills and ideas. On the flip side, AI takeover of these tasks might raise employee concerns. Identify the employees that would benefit from learning new skills. You can also create unique job roles to fit them better.
