Long Lunch Breaks: New Way to Boost Productivity

For decades, employers have considered lunch break as a waste of time and productivity and that is why many ascertain a duration or time limit for it. However, with the growing trend for employee welfare programs, many organizations are on the verge of renewing the conventional approaches.

According to a survey of an Essity brand Tork, about 22 percent of managers in North America are less hardworking as they take regular breaks. The other 20 percent of employees believe that their managers will consider them inefficient or less productive if they take a lunch break. About 13 percent are worried about the perception of their coworkers if they would take breaks while the remaining 38 percent are not stimulated enough to take breaks.

The survey results are alarming for the employers who are unaware of the benefits of lunch breaks. Thereby, the author shares some positive impacts of increasing lunch break duration and encouraging employees to take breaks:

  1. Strengthen Bonding: Instead of gobbling some quick bites at their isolated workstations, employees must be encouraged to go out in the fresh air and eat fresh food with their peers. This will improve team bonding and strengthen social skills of each individual in the organization.
  2. Work-Life Balance: Everyone does not prefer to take breaks to eat. Employees with kids might prefer to use the break time to pick up their kids from school or to the gym, or even engage in meditation. A longer lunch break will give the employees an opportunity to strike a balance between their personal and professional life. This will surely reflect on their productivity too.
  3. Boost Health: Quick-fix lunch options are mostly fast-food, harmful for health. A lengthy lunch break will encourage the employees to eat healthy food like salads or good carbs that will improve their physical and mental well-being. This will reduce the number of sick leaves in a year and enhance productivity.
  4. Work Accuracy: Often managers stress more on the consequences of long lunch breaks, ignoring its benefits completely. Although the employee spends an additional 15-30 minutes, this practice engages him and eventually increases productivity.
