CIO Tips: How to Shift to a New Industry Seamlessly

The CIO role has gained prominence with the popularity of innovative technologies like AI, ML, NLP, RPA, etc. Companies usually nullify experience when candidates come from a different sector. How can CIOs escape that bias if they want to shift to a new industry? In this InfoVision article, know the tips that could help you shift to a new industry seamlessly.

The Switching CIO

Traditional IT leadership roles had no problem shifting to another industry as their experience was transferrable. With the advent of new technologies, today’s CIO must have industry-sepcific knowledge. IT recruiter Martha Heller points out that Dave Smokey left Flextronics for AstraZeneca. Also, Oliver Bussman moved from financial services to SAP. However, Heller remarks that more clients are asking for a CIO that has experience in a specific industry. Irrespective of such rising demands, if you want to explore new opportunities, the following tips will help you out:

Identifying Late Tech Adopters: If you have successfully implemented a technology, look for companies in other industries that are planning to adopt the same. They will overlook the differences in industry knowledge if they can derive value from you as a CIO.

Vendor Servicing Other Industries: Find out from vendors what other industries they are serving. If you have gained experience in that technology, you can easily interview as a CIO in that sector.

Finding a Cushion Before the Jump: You cannot jump straight from being a CIO of a healthcare organization to becoming a CIO of an insurance firm. Nobody will accept you as a serious candidate nor can you understand your role. Search an industry which merges both the industries, for example, health insurance.

Being Charitable: There are several charitable institutes you can support with your CIO instincts. This also helps create rapport with the industry leaders that are into social causes. You will gain knowledge from the work and earn the desired reputation from the relevant industry.
