Project Portfolio Management

Are You Doing These 3 Resource Management Mistakes in PPM?

One of the most important tasks in PPM is resource management. Companies have more projects than they have talents so underutilizing or overscheduling even a single resource can cost money. Be aware of the 3 resource management mistakes in PPM from David Walton’s article at Bestoutcome.

PPM and Resource Management

Since resource management affects the company’s bottom line, it is all the more reason to invest in PPM applications. Sometimes PPM tools are not enough to save the day. Following are the resource management mistakes you might do in PPM:

  • Resource Estimation: It is not possible to report available resources every 15 minutes to your clients. Weekly or monthly resource estimation are more sensible and energy-saving. You can do a monthly resource estimation in PPM to know resource availability for the year. For shorter projects, your resource management should involve checking for overlapping resources from cross-functional teams. It is best to keep high-level estimates so that you have room to add or subtract resource hours as required.
  • 100% Capacity Planning: Though you have the holiday plans of all the resources at hand, you cannot expect them to stick to it rigorously. A new project, unplanned sick leaves, training, etc. are unavoidable. Keep a buffer in your project portfolio management to handle the triple constraints of project management well.
  • Tool Selection: Relying on an unstable or wrong application can cause mayhem to your projects, so select wisely. If you require to introduce new policies for the new PPM tool, it might not be the correct tool for you. Also, having a PPM application that provides you with hourly visibility of resource management might not be a safe bait. Applications that allow high-level views are more flexible than the specific ones.
