How the CIO’s Role is Evolving with AI-Powered Automation

Automated tech is slated to touch more departments and roles in the organization, and the CIO is poised to be a key player in this digital transformation. In her article in, Nancy Harris, EVP and Managing Director of Sage North America, describes how the CIO’s role is evolving with the introduction of AI-powered automation.

Business Advisor

The CIO of today must discern which technology is simply flashy add-ons, and which of the innovations can deliver measurable business value. To this end, the IT leaders need to step out of their department and work across the company to provide advice on technologies that can address business needs and goals. Therefore, CIOs need a comprehensive understanding of business strategies so as to recommend new IT strategies – thus, they are now business advisors.

Data-Driven Decision Making

With the introduction of AI-powered capabilities, insights got from internal data are used to charter future steps. As such, automation takes care of the tedious admin work, allowing IT teams to work on strategic projects geared towards business goals. Thereby, automation optimizes IT operations.  In addition, AI-enhanced software helps CIOs gain a holistic view of the business. Thus, CIOs can now be termed as expert consultants who have a clear understanding of what tech best suits the needs of departments across the company.

The CEO of Tomorrow

With their focus now on business strategy and technology geared towards business growth, the CIO is primed to be the CEO of tomorrow. Of course, this transformation in roles and responsibilities isn’t only limited to the CIO, but this could easily be extended to the whole department. Understandably, this has opened up new hiring requirements for IT staff as well.

With the introduction of AI-powered automation, CIOs and IT teams are afforded more time to focus on strategic aspects of the business. As such, these tech introductions have changed how CIOs function, and are poised to change how we view the role of the CIO as we move forward.
