It is more evident in IT since tech-savvy Millennials are increasingly opting for technical jobs. Though Baby Boomers and Gen X led digitization, they should harness the Millennial energy instead of resenting the generation gap. Your business will succeed only when raw talents are channelized well and allowed to explore their curiosity. Following are the 3 ways you can leverage the generation gap to your benefit:

  1. That Feeling of Superiority: Though you have come early to the scene, do not dismiss the Millennials as kids. This is a tendency seen among IT veterans and leaders. You might have kids the same age as your current Millennial employees. Point to be noted, these 20 and 30-somethings have started handling technology earlier than your generation. Not only that, they can quickly adapt to new technologies and accept changes faster. This is the key difference and you can call this a generation gap. They might need to accumulate experience to understand your long-term vision, but that does not make them any less responsible.
  2. Painting Them All with the Same Brush: Though the Millennials share some traits, you should not generalize them all. Surveys on generational behavior are done on a macro level and subjective studies cannot give you a real picture. So, treat every individual as per the strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Empowering Is the Key: Money might not be the sole factor to retain these tech-savvy Millennials. Listen to them to understand and better align their technical expertise. However, you must update your IT infrastructure and software development methods to utilize their talents optimally. Give them the space to explore on their own and throw challenges at them to heighten their engagement.
