Gartner VP Whit Andrews observes that though early AI adopters are quite interested, not much progress has been made. As per Gartner’s 2018 CIO Agenda Survey, 4 percent of CIOs have led AI implementation. 46 percent are on their way. What Did the Early AI Adopters Learn?

As is normal with adopting new technologies, the early AI adopters had faced several challenges in their digitization effort. Following are the 4 lessons that you must know to avoid making their mistakes in your journey:

  1. Set the Initial Bar Low: Do not expect everything to fall in place like a well-matched puzzle. Andrews suggests to not expect high returns on your initial implementations. Start small and target to achieve outcomes like ‘process improvements, customer satisfaction or financial benchmarking.’ Learn the lessons that you can utilize for larger projects.
  2. Do Not Lose Workforce, Not Yet: Though it might seem attractive to you, do not lose the experienced workforce. AI must enable the employees to do more creative work and be involved more strategically. As per Gartner, 20 percent of companies will make their employees control and lead neural networks by 2020.
  3. Transfer Knowledge: The early AI adopters reveal that the majority of the companies lack the skills for AI implementation. 53 percent of the respondents convey that they lack their knowledge is ‘limited.’ By 2022, Gartner says that AI initiatives will throw false results due to prejudiced data, algorithms, and the associated teams. Gartner VP Jim Hare suggests that companies equip themselves to store a large amount of data to fuel AI projects. Relying on external storage or consultancy will not help in the long run. The early AI project members must transfer the knowledge they gathered from external experts to your employees.
  4. Know the Inner Working of the AI Software: Though it is not always possible to understand how the AI solutions work, understanding the machinery will reduce external dependencies. Know how the AI solution is helping you to conclude before investing in it.
