4 Steps to Stop Workplace Discrimination
You can make a conscious effort to stop discriminating. However, it is the unintended and involuntary ones that you have no control of. Nadhan attended a SpringCM meeting on “Unconscious bias and how to make your voice heard.” The reasons behind such form of discrimination came to light in the discussion. Workplace discrimination can spring from how you were brought up and what you experienced in life. The author came up with the following 4 steps which could help leaders to stop workplace discrimination, albeit done involuntarily.
- Start from the Beginning: Our human brain always try to find solutions to a given situation. Workplace discrimination evolves from this native human mentality. To prevent repeated occurrences, leaders should encourage more inclusive culture. Stop stray discrimination by habituating your employees with diversity. You should hire people irrespective of gender, religion, community, and physical abilities, among others.
- Combined Effort: You can check viruses with firewalls, but you cannot change the mentality of employees overnight. One of the penalists in the SpringCM meeting notes that workplace discrimination occurs mostly in MNC’s or large enterprises. To stop workplace discrimination leaders should join hands and address incidents with understanding and firmness.
- Make Them Work Together: When a project is under way, team coordination matters the most. Make a conscious effort to make the team as diverse as possible. The underlying or inherent biases diffuse when team members bond with each other.
- Evaluate the Value Addition: Workplace discrimination will fade away when you see how diversity adds value to the corporate culture. Do not keep the good news to yourself. Make your employees see the tangible benefits the company has received from the diverse team culture. This will establish a positive vibe towards acceptance of diverse opinions in a team.
