More women are pursuing STEM subjects now than ever. However, World Economic Forum (WEF) informs that women have to wait five more generations to get equal opportunities in the workplace if you are to consider the current speed of reformation. In this article at strategy+business, Carol Stubbings opines women can earn their rightful place at work earlier than predicted.

Figuring Out the Missing Links

Besides being a mother of three children, Stubbings is also a partner with PwC UK. That said, she remarks how things have changed for the better in these twenty years. With new elements coming in the purview of board-level dialogues, she is positive about women taking up more important roles in the workplace.


As per a recent PwC report, 58 percent of employees wanted more transparency in office policies in terms of promotion or career advancement. You hardly know the basis on which you are reviewed. It is an organizational responsibility to inform you beforehand if family planning or taking a vacation will affect your career growth. Informed employees can then decide whether to take it or leave it.


Women think they need to be either perfect or overqualified for the role they aspire to hold someday, unlike men. As per a PwC survey, only 17 percent opined that they would ask for a promotion even if they were short of the required skills. Organizations must recognize people with high potential and give them that extra push to achieve their goals, irrespective of gender. In this case, women can get better exposure as they are usually more prepared than men.

Unbiased Culture

Since the top management is usually dominated by men, it becomes tough for female competitors to earn the well-deserved role. The reason behind this selective approach is that people tend to lean towards personalities with whom they find commonality. This must change.

Looking for the Right Skills

Leaders can be weak in technical skills but should know how to direct a team wisely. However, majority of the enterprises judge employees by the skills they have mastered in their current position. So, organizations must promote you by judging the skills you require for the new role.
