How to Fix the 3 Biggest Project Management Problems

Any time you are managing human beings, there is no one-size-fits-all solution, but there are general practices that can help. In an article for Forbes, Maren Hogan shares some problems that can arise during project management, and how to sidestep them in an agile fashion. There are three problems any project manager needs to be alert to:

  1. The team does not understand the project.
  2. The project manager is either too rigid or too laid back.
  3. The timeline is impossible to follow.

Project Repair

When the team is unclear about the project, it is often because of a communication breakdown between upper management, the project manager, and the team. It is the job of the project manager to ensure that everyone clearly understands the purpose of the project, and that they are well-equipped with what they need to be successful in the delivery of the assignment. Project managers should know how to access all of the important information.

It is the role of the project manager to lead the team, and in order to do this most effectively they must find the balance between being too relaxed in their approach or too uptight. Micromanaging will get a leader nowhere because it will cause the team to become overwhelmingly frustrated. Additionally, not giving enough direction can lead to a team who does not accomplish goals on time. Peer evaluations can help a beginner project manager know where they need to improve. This evaluation should contain open-ended questions so the team can share their experience.

The final common problem is when the project timeline is far too impossible. In order for a project manager to do his or her job, they need to be able to see the big picture and understand how the timeline all works together:

PMs need to be able to see that every member of the team contributes to each ongoing project and foresee the end results. I see the most change involved in project timelines, and getting into the practice of pushing back deadlines can be a nightmare for team productivity (and ultimately the reputation of your company).
