How to Hire Your Next CIO

IT is transforming into a new entity, something more along the lines of “digital services.” Undertaking this sort of huge transformation means the organization will need to invest in a new CIO. In an article for InformationWeek, Jonathon Feldman elaborates on what organizations should be looking for when they hire a new CIO.

The Elements That Matter

Although the specifics of what each company will need in a CIO will vary, there are some skills that will transfer throughout any industry. A CIO should be able to keep essentials running, execute a digital vision, and have a good understanding of the financials of their organization. More specifically, a CIO should possess the potential to be:

  1. Tech savvy
  2. Strong communicator and marketer
  3. Aware of security
  4. Able to see the big picture

In order to get the most out of the business’s technology, the person in charge needs to understand technology. CIOs must recognize that the business today is technology-centric. That being said, it is not enough to be knowledgeable about technology; the CIO must understand security and how to handle any threats that may come their way. A CIO candidate with some basic security experience would be ideal.

Any effective leader needs to be an excellent communicator with their employees or vendors. What has changed is that the CIO may need to directly communicate with the customer. This type of marketing is still quite new, but it is really beginning to take off. CIOs must be comfortable marketing and communicating with customers.

The CIO cannot focus and devote all of their attention to one of these areas; they need to be flexible and fluent in all areas to be effective. They need to be able to keep the business in mind and deliver on what the business’s main focus is. They also must be open to collaborative efforts with their team and allow for everyone to bring their expertise to the table. A CIO candidate with multiple references across different disciplines may be the best.
