10 Ways to Be More Nimble in Your Projects

Project managers have a very arduous task of getting projects done on time and on budget. This is only made more difficult by the excessive obstacles in their path, weighing them down. Before the project even begins, complete a quick analysis to identify the obstacles that may get in your way. Get together with your team and brainstorm possible problems and solutions. Project sponsors may have more insight into possible problems, and working closely with them provides more minds to brainstorm adversities and more hands to remove hindrances.

Building some momentum will help to launch your project into success. It is good to talk and plan, but to really get the ball rolling you simply need to start. In order to really keep momentum throughout the project, you will need a skilled team. Keep in mind that having knowledgeable people is important, but sometimes what is more vital is the chemistry of those people; the team should mesh well together.

Oftentimes, projects attempt to have too many meetings. Productive meetings are great and should occur to help everyone stay focused and on track, but too many meetings will have the opposite effect and waste everyone’s time. Along the same lines, it is important to reduce the amount of documentation. People can become so focused on writing everything down in black and white that they lose sight of what is really important: actually executing the project.

You built a knowledgeable, skilled team, so use them! They have ideas and insight that can help you to complete projects better. Additionally, keep in mind that a small team may prove more effective because they will be able to voice individual opinions more, as well as the fact that it is much easier to manage an intimate group rather than a huge board.

The 80/20 rule is the idea that 80 percent of project results will come from 20 percent of your effort. Always be mindful about what you are starting to do, what you should continue to do, and what is no longer useful and should be ceased.

The final tip is to co-locate your team if possible. When everyone is in close proximity to one another and can actively converse, more can get done.
