CIOs Have to be Business Savvy to Get on Board

Ishan Bhattacharya writes for CIO India on a now familiar topic formulating in the minds of IT leaders. He says that the time of CIOs merely monitoring the four walls that maintain the IT department are fading away, and CIOs are now aspiring to take a seat at the executive table.

From Imagination to Reality

With big data, analytics, and customer satisfaction coming to the forefront as major new sources of innovation and business differentiation, the CIO stands poised to offer great value to the business that no one else could as readily deliver. In order to accomplish this, it is recommended that CIOs develop their ability to create and maintain change. They must also take specific measures to better understand the goals of the business, so that they can better look ahead to what sorts of innovation will best further those goals. Alignment of business and IT is integral.

But in general, CIOs should be able to manage people and market ideas, like any good leader should be able to do. Bhattacharya concludes that no one else but the CIO has as wide a comprehension of the business, and that is the trump card for securing a place with the board.
