The Big Picture Explained: Alignment Starts with Six Points

Are you finding alignment between IT and the business a little hard to grasp? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. You can’t expect a fully aligned organization unless you first understand what alignment looks like for you. Mix Videos gives us a three-minute tutorial of where to start.

The Six Measurement Points

There are six characteristics of alignment to look for:

  • Communication
  • Skills
  • Architecture
  • Measurement
  • Partnership
  • Governance

Measure how well these six traits are developed in your organization. Develop a rating system, and have both the business and IT people rate these different areas separately. Then, compare the two ratings. Do you see big areas of difference in, for instance, how IT and the business are rating partnership? It’s not just the low areas that need help, but the areas where there is the biggest inconsistency.

Seeing the Big Picture

Above all, remember technical skills aren’t the whole thing. It’s about adding new skills constantly. How much do these new IT systems enable the business to work better? Are you measuring what systems contribute the most? High sharing between IT and the business equals low risk and high progress. That sounds like something IT and the business can definitely agree on.
