Don’t Be Crippled by Succession Planning

If your IT leaders aren’t involved in succession planning, it’s like taking your giant of a company and tying its hands and feet. What was once powerful is now clumsy and weak. John K. Higgins reminds us that nowhere is this more important than in federal agencies. A government report revealed that federal agency IT believes their organization’s succession planning to be “below par.”

One reason for this is the gap between HR and IT. When HR from the same organization was surveyed, they saw their succession planning to be in much better shape than the IT department believed. That’s because many of these organizations already have federal succession planning programs in place, but IT didn’t know about them, or didn’t believe they were adequate.

One of the problems formed by this gap between departments is a lack of strong leaders.  Without succession planning, leaders are ill-equipped to buy or use the best IT products for their agency. It’s obvious there is a department gap to bridge, and a leader in touch with succession planning is just the person to do it.
