Balancing on the Three-Legged Stool of Change Management

You know that wobbly feeling when you sit in a chair and suddenly realize one leg is shorter than the others? You feel off-balance, and you risk falling you’re not careful. Karen Ferris explains that change is like a three-legged stool, and all three of the legs have to be the same length to keep your organization from toppling over.

Leg one is project management. This is includes all the basics, like organizing, securing, and controlling resources so you can finish your project on time and on budget. Leg two is leadership and sponsorship. Without it, you wouldn’t have the strategy or motivation to keep the project going. Leg three is organizational change management.  There are always those that will resist change, but change management can guide the resistors through the process.

They say if it’s not broken, don’t fix it, but you don’t want to hang onto old IT practices until they break. Practice innovation and change management in your organization, and if the changes feel a little wobbly, don’t throw them out. Make sure all three change components are receiving the right amount of support, and your organization will be well-balanced in no time.
