The Personal Information and Protection Commission of South Korea (PIPC) fined Google $50 million and Meta $22 million after a meeting with representatives from each firm. The brands’ spokespeople agreed that their business practices could result in “serious” privacy violations. In a press release, the commission stated that the fines were the highest penalty ever levied by South Korea for infringement of privacy laws. Both businesses disputed the panel’s findings, and Meta said it might sue to overturn the penalty. Administrative lawsuits may contest the penalty within 90 days of the corporation receiving formal notice of the commission’s ruling. According to PIPC, Facebook and Instagram, owned by Google and Meta, did not inform or obtain permission while collecting information when users accessed other websites and services.
