4 Smart Ways to Secure Your Personal Data

Your cell phones will undoubtedly contain some of your most personal, confidential, and sensitive information like your passwords, account numbers, text messages, videos, photos, and emails. If your phone ends up in the wrong hands, there are high chances of someone stealing your identity, buying stuff with your money, or even hacking into your social media accounts and emails. If you plan to sell your current phone to upgrade to a new model, be sure to protect your privacy. In this article at TechRepublic, Veronica Combs explains how to secure your data when selling your phone.

How to Protect Your Personal Data?

Have a Backup Your

Before selling or trading-in your phone, back up all data stored on your device. Make sure you have everything you need for your new phone before deleting everything off your old phone.

Sign Off From all the Accounts

After you have a data backup, deactivate, or deregister your phone from your accounts. By doing so, whoever purchases your phone will not be able to reactive your accounts. If you are an iPhone user, then ensure to turn off ‘Activation Lock.’ If you are an Android user, it is a good idea to sign out of your Google account before resetting or formatting your phone.

Encrypt Your Data

Before securely deleting data from your mobile device, it is a good idea to encrypt the data. By doing so, it makes it hard to restore erased data. iPhones encrypt data automatically. However, Android users must do this manually.

Factory Reset Your Phone

The easiest way to delete all the data on your phone before selling it is to do a factory reset. “For iPhones, go to Settings, General, Reset, and then select ‘Erase all content.’ For Android phones, turn off Factory Reset Protection,” says Veronica. If you are an Android user, go to Settings, Privacy, Factory data reset, then choose ‘Reset phone.’

Following these steps will get your phone ready for selling while keeping your data safe at the same time. To read the original article, click on
