How Can CIOs Enable Business Better Than CEO?

CIOs used to provide IT strategies and technical solutions for decades in big corporates. However, with changing dynamics of the IT industry, even the CIOs’ role is modified. The new age CIOs can also do business development.

In this article at mrc’s Cup of Joe Blog, the author ‘Joe Stangarone’ explains the evolving role of the IT division of an organization. He believes that CIOs are not glued to the back-office function anymore. They can become the business enablers of the new-age IT department and be a vital asset to the company.

How to Enable Business?

The answer to this may vary from business to business. However, the practical approach to draw business will remain the same. Explore the reasons why CIOs can become better business enablers:

  • Understand Business Goals: Most IT leaders or CIOs are well-versed with the importance of business goals. However, it is significant because nothing else matters more than a seamless return on investment. Even though technology and business are two diverse paths and their perspectives are different, their purpose is the same which is—growth.
  • Eliminate Silos: For years, IT and business held their separate entities, but cultural silos are long-standing barriers between business and technology. The CIOs need to train their minds and change the ways they engage with their potential business partners. Indeed, it is easier said than done. However, if the CIOs start initiating small steps of involving business users in their IT meetings, the collaboration will be easier.
  • Adopt the Shadow IT Mindset: Many IT leaders approach ‘Shadow IT’ in resentment. In this approach, the end-users adapt their solutions without involving their IT departments to offer any assistance. However, if the CIOs understand the user’s perspective, they will not find it malicious.
