The 5G Revolution: 3 Things IT Leaders Should Know

5G is available now to a few city users that have devices that can support the emerging cellular network. Though base station gears are getting heated up, the technology surely is turning a new chapter in the market. In this article at Information Week, Gordon Smith discusses 3 things that IT leaders should know about the 5G revolution.

Bracing for the Incoming 5G Revolution

Though CIOs know that 5G will transform how businesses are today, they still do not know how to solve implementation issues. For now, posing the right questions and being flexible to changes is more important than getting foolproof answers and solutions. Following are the 3 things that IT leaders should know about the 5G revolution:

Doors Open to New Technologies: To support 200 times more volumetric flow, mobile pipelines are going to be bigger. This will allow companies to handle more data capacity, complicated applications, and bandwidth. 3D video streaming, AR, and other data-based platforms can be put to regular use. Dropping latency will give rise to better responses and real-time activities. Sensors that require less power will enable IoT devices.

Planning for the Immediate and Future: To get the advantages that this cellular network offers, CIOs must invest in building the infrastructure. Set up antennas, employee smartphones, and in-house equipment and data capacity to leverage the 5G network. However, before investing further on IoT, AR, VR, and AI, consider if the ROI will balance out the costs.

Create a 5G-based Business Model: There is yet to be a model based on which this cellular network can be optimized for business purposes. What CIOs can do is, ask questions that are customer-oriented and technology-related to make the most compelling use cases. Analyze the stakeholders you need on board and the data strategies that would help in reducing costs. Figure out the benefits of the 5G network and the type of technologies you can implement. Consider the reasons behind getting an ‘intelligent ecosystem’ and the resources and skills you need to get ROIs.
