Some CIOs oversee other C-suite roles. They are chief data officer (CDO), chief analytics officer (CAO), chief information security officer (CISO), and chief technology officer (CTO). Find out which role your company CIO is playing at the moment:

Leader or Follower: Now, the majority of the CIOs have the same level of importance as other C-suite executives. This was not the case a few years ago. However, some companies are yet to break the traditional hierarchy as their IT department is still on the sideline. For them, the IT department’s job is to keep the lights on. A reputed research firm’s consulting leader Paul Gaynor remarks that every company is striving to be technologically advanced. So, a CIO must raise voice to be taken seriously in the company’s strategic decision-making process.

City of Oakland CIO Andrew Peterson knew that he needed to gain trust to improve IT conditions. Earn quick wins to prove yourself if you are working in a public sector but have private sector experience. The more technology is aligned with the business, the more CIOs form part of the senior management team.

Investment Portfolio or Cost Center: Companies have begun to realize that they must invest in technology to stay relevant in the market. Strategic investments involve buying technologies that are related to business goals. AI can be a solution for several companies. However, there are companies that are conflicted regarding the IT budget and spending. Gaynor states that technology will yield revenue in the future. Instead of updating IT only for infrastructure maintenance, companies should implement technology for overall advancements.


As a CIO, the primary challenge is complicated processes that non-IT leaders and teams would not understand. Digital transformation does not help clarify this dilemma. However, you must improve and enable user experience for better buy-ins.
