Forrester Research’s Technology Predictions for 2019

The Year of the CIO

According to Forrester Research, 2019 will be the year that the CIO takes charge of the organization. The CIOs will drive business strategy that harnesses the value of a wide range of new technologies and maximizes the value and security of today’s environment. To enable this, CIOs will build their leadership teams, while empowering trusted operators to handle day-to-day activities.

Lowered Digital Expectations

25% of firms are expected to decelerate digital efforts leading to a loss in market share. A more pragmatic view to digital investments will be taken in 2019. The report states that, “Tangible efforts, such as shifting customers to lower-cost digital channels, launching digital products, monetizing data assets, and automating processes to improve margins, will come to the fore.”

AI’s Promise

The year will also see robotic process automation (RPA) and artificial intelligence (AI) join forces to create digital workers for more than 40% of enterprises. 2019 will also see AI dispense with the barriers that held it back in the previous year, and firms will put structures in place to let it fulfill its promise.

Automation Replaces Talent

According to the report, 25% of leaders are expected to make up talent shortfall with automation. Further, 7% of jobs that can be automated are expected to be lost to automation.

Blockchain Boost for Supply Chain

By the end of 2019, more than 50% of the top 100 advertisers will use blockchain for supply chain transparency. 2019 will see blockchain chip away at the digital advertising’s opacity issue. As such, with large brands being in blockchain pilot programs, the end of the year will see them better understand where wastes and abuses lie.

IOT Upswing

The report reveals that 85% of firms will or plan to implement IOT solutions in 2019. The report goes on to add that “B2B applications of the technology are set to take off in 2019.” Further, “B2B IOT will focus on driving efficiencies, connecting the enterprise, expanding the edge, and, in some cases, providing personalized customer experiences.”
