The prevalence of procrastination is consistent across allies, gender, and nationalities. Yet, researchers are unable to identify any suitable way that helps people not to miss a deadline.
In this article at Strategy-Business, Theodore Kinni shares his perspective on managing procrastinators. He says that employee’s lack of productivity can cause a mess for planning, productivity, team performance, and anything else dependent on a coordinated activity or to a schedule.
In such circumstances, the leaders or project managers are left with two options, one is to give a blunt reality check to the procrastinators while the other way is to fire them. Both the ways do not assure better productivity for the organization. Therefore, here are few tips for managing procrastinators:
- Identify Them First: Always keep in mind that surpassing deadline is not the team’s fault, but only one person is responsible for it. Therefore, identify the one who acts like a perpetual handbrake.
- Short & Tough Deadlines: A vague and long-term deadline incites procrastination. Thereby, as you identify the procrastinators, give them tough deadlines for work to beat. If the task given to them are long-term then break the work in small intervals and assign deadlines for each of it.
- Avoid Pile on: The procrastinators are efficient enough to handle multiple tasks. But that does not mean you dump several tasks on them at once. Expect them to manage rationally and find other interesting ways to make them productive for you.
- Zero Down Distraction: Distractions fuel procrastination in many ways. Keeping every possible distraction away from the procrastinators will show you the positive side of them and might change their nature completely.
- Impose Liability: Procrastinators always look for ways to cover up or make excuses for not doing whatever was assigned to them. So, by clearly defining the job to each team member, and by tracking accountability in the most public way, procrastination could be managed easily.
- Challenge Their Ability: By extending confidence in their capability and explaining to them the reason for it may bring unexpected results.
- Seek Help: Ultimately, the procrastinators are human too, who are willing to extend help to their peer group. When you have a job that needs to be done within a limited period, ask for help from the procrastinators. Sometimes it turns out to be a motivational turning point for them to overcome their disinterest.
