3 Simple Goals for Project Managers to Hit This Year

“New year, new you” is a saying that uses the position of Earth in space as an excuse to make you be a better person. This arbitrariness is probably why the gyms start emptying out around February. So in lieu of dropping 40 pounds, maybe just focus on being a better project manager. In a post for Voices on Project Management, Dave Wakeman shares three simple goals for project managers that you can surely achieve:

  1. Don’t get bogged down in arcane processes or needless activity.
  2. Make your role about impact, not activity.
  3. Rededicate yourself to communicating effectively.

Management Goals

Process and procedure for the sake of process and procedure is a waste of time and money, but when you are in the thick of things, you may not realize that what you are doing is not value-adding. Take a step back and think about how you can make things leaner. And while you are it, do a double-check that you are not micromanaging how the team works.

All the work that brings you closer to making users and stakeholders happy is good, and vice versa. So do not think of work as a series of isolated activities, but rather as a chain of necessary activities that enable business outcomes:

I understand that many of us work in an environment defined by the old Peter Drucker maxim “what gets measured gets managed.” But in many instances, we’ve taken that principle to its ultimate conclusion where we don’t actually achieve anything. Instead, we do very well what need not be done.

In becoming a more practical project manager, a key idea would be to focus on your ability to make an impact. This likely entails having tougher conversations with stakeholders. It also likely means making tougher decisions. I never said being a project manager would be easy.

One more thing project managers should strive to do perennially is maintain and improve their communication skills. It is the single most important skill of project management, so you ought to have a pretty stellar hold on it.
