As we continue to digitize the workforce, reports are making it clear that digital skills are now a must-have for accessible “good” jobs. But it raises an important question: How do modern companies deal with workplace digitization? In an article for TechRepublic, Conner Forrest gives three steps on how to fix the economic problems caused by workforce digitization:
- Expand the talent pipeline
- Expand digital literacy
- Grow soft skills
The first step to fixing your problems of workforce digitization is to start expanding your talent pipeline. This means increasing the opportunities for your existing staff to develop their technical skills, and it also means branching out to build relationships with relevant educational organizations. You can utilize co-ops, apprenticeships, boot camps, and internships to build and/or connect with new talent.
This focus on learning also extends to digital literacy as well. A report from the Brookings Institution details that increasing even just base-level knowledge of digital skills (like with office suite applications) can affect a company in a positive way. “Mid-digital” jobs in various sectors can be a great place for those without extensive digital training to become better acquainted with new technology.
The final step that Forrest emphasizes is the growth of soft skills:
… organizations need to provide training or education to enhance interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence among workers and students, the report said. These skills will be in high-demand in the near-future, and broadly applicable across different teams as well.
“The greatest education and training needs placed on families, schools, and firms by the further digitalization of the workplace may not be just the mastery of more and different computer skills.” the report said. “Instead, the work ahead will likely be at least as much about getting better at doing the human things the machines cannot.”
