5 Key Considerations When Managing Remote Project Teams

As the cloud connects us more than ever before, working remotely has thrived and grown. By 2020, it’s estimated that 34% of all full-time employees will be working remotely. Managing teams of remote employees requires a different approach than the traditional, in-house route. In an article for TechRepublic, Moira Alexander gives five considerations for managing such a team:

Alexander starts off by emphasizing the importance of secured platforms:

The aim here should be to make connections faster and more secure without sacrificing the integrity of the data. When it comes to performance, a content delivery network (CDN) can reduce the time it takes for data to reach an intended user and help improve performance while not sacrificing on security. For increased security, a web application firewall can more actively protect against threats like hacks and breaches. These basically prevent unwanted access which may compromise the system or its contents. Organizations should be using secure and encrypted connections through SSL/TLS in both client-facing and internal applications. Any latency-caused communication inefficiencies can be optimized through a CDN. Optimizing SSL connections this way can also ensure high-grade SSL implementation.

The next step is to ensure that there is proper platform onboarding for your team from the vendor. If there is insufficient onboarding, it could cost time and money unnecessarily, not to mention cause irritation. Build a checklist of considerations for your team and work with vendors so that they understand what aspects of implementation are most important to your situation. Document and address any issues that arise in the process, and get a consensus from stakeholders before formally wrapping up onboarding.

Managing finances is another important consideration. Particularly, you may want to explore shifting to an “operating expense-based structure,” and to explore distributed models in general. The old ways of spending aren’t working as well anymore.

Managing a close-knit company culture remotely will require effort too. Start from the ground up, encouraging individuals to share their ideas and foster an environment of peers working together. Additionally, be clear on the goals of projects and provide wide supporting information, so that everyone is working according to the same vision.

Finally, for remote working to be sustainable, the underlying infrastructure must be scalable. Success requires ample bandwidth.
