Improve Your Communication Skills with These Four Tips

Language is the foundation of society, because it allows for people to communicate ideas with one another. DespiteĀ language beingĀ imperative, language is too often ignored or worse, undervalued. In an article for TechRepublic, Patrick Gray shares some simple tips on how to improve your communication abilities. There are four easy ways to become better at communication:

  1. Listen.
  2. Simplify.
  3. Think before you speak.
  4. Embrace language.

Start, Collaborate, Listen

It is no secret that you need to be a good listener in order to have great communication skills, but what might be a new idea is that you should put yourself in the place of the listener. When you explain a project or idea to a colleague, do you explain it in the same way you would to your boss? People are receptive in different ways, so you need to take that into account when marketing your ideas.

Not everyone understands the vast technical world of IT, and so they need a simplified version of the problem. Simplicity can help to better engage your target audience because it helps to put the message on a level they will better understand. Making the topic relatable by using an analogy is one easy way to do this.

Silence is not a moment in the conversation to fill with trivial words. It is okay to take a moment before you speak to collect your thoughts and compose your ideas. Silence in a conversation may even be encouraged.

It is inevitable that someday, somewhere you will hear a colleague speak and his or her message will really stick with you. So why did this particular idea resonate so deeply with you? How are they utilizing language, and how can you learn from them to become a better communicator yourself?
