Where and How You Should Begin Your ITSM Process Journey

It happens every day: someone begins the journey of implementing ITSM-based processes. Unfortunately, it is all too common for this implementation to be unsuccessful and wreak havoc on the company. In a post for Valorize IT, advice is given about how to successfully begin an ITSM process journey.

The Journey Starts Here

It is human nature: we always want the easy way out. We spend more effort looking for a shortcut than we actually would completing the given task. Human beings are more than capable of achieving greatness; the key is to understand ourselves personally.

There are three essential steps in the implementation of ITSM:

  1. Set goals.
  2. Know yourself.
  3. Fill in the GAPs.

Before you can go anywhere, you need a destination. Begin by defining what you would like ITSM to accomplish for you and your company. The goals need to be specific to your own company and aligned with preexisting objectives. They should also be “SMART” (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely). Goals should additionally be prioritized by level of importance.

The second step is to get to know you. In order to better understand where you want to go and how to get there, you need to understand where you currently are. Begin by looking at the people working in your organization and their current skill levels. Analyze your processes and how well they are working. Study the products you develop and how well they are able to deliver your intended results. Finally, evaluate your relationship with your partners and suppliers.

After you have successfully set goals and analyzed yourself, you will better understand your GAPs in where you want to be. You will want to investigate how to best bridge them and make ITSM a practical solution for you.

This simple approach does not take much time or many resources, but it does give you a solid foundation to learn how best to increase the probability of success. You can read the original post here:
