Nothing Matters More Than Continual Improvement

They say that change is the only constant when it comes to technology, but the other constant you should be banking on is the constant improvement of people, process, products, and partners. In a post for Valorize IT, this push towards constant improvement is discussed.

Better and Leaner

Staying relevant is what everyone ultimately strives for, and in order to do that, there needs to be constant improvement. Creating an “improvement culture” will help for the improvement to really stick and be instilled within the organization. Continual service improvement, or CSI, inspires the constant measuring of processes in an effort to continually improve them.

There needs to exist a few key aspects in order to establish a worthwhile improvement culture:

  1. Governance
  2. Accountability
  3. No complaints
  4. Proof
  5. Maintenance
  6. Incentivize

To begin with, there needs to be someone who is the active leader to stay on top of receiving and managing improvement suggestions. Keep in mind that a senior manager may result in longer lead times, so perhaps a different leader may prove more beneficial. There also needs to be a person who is globally responsible for the improvement efforts, a Continual Service Manager. It is one thing to have the drive and leadership skills to get the ball rolling, but it is an entirely different thing to continually push it uphill. Someone needs to take on this accountability and always push further.

It is human nature to complain, but this creates a negative environment. The complaints need to go away, and instead, there should be suggestions for improvements. One way to create a more positive environment is to show visible proof of improvement. This will help to motivate and encourage further enhancements.

Maintain improvement suggestions in a system that is easy to use, yet still robust. Merely having this in place will help to improve sponsorship. It may also prove helpful to incentivize improvement efforts. Giving recognition to good ideas for improvement will encourage your staff to suggest more ways to improve.
