How Leading CIOs Are Addressing the Digital Skills Gap

It is estimated over half of all large organizations, approximately 125,000, launched digital business proposals by the end of 2015. In a post for Gartner, Peter Sondergaard explores how businesses can implement digital avenues better. The new problem for CIOs of course is that they now have to prepare their team for the digital world while still keeping up with all of the digital transformation.

Building a Smarter Approach

Digital business is pushing for CIOs and their IT organizations to further develop their digital technology skills, cloud, mobile, or social analytics, as well as acquire new skills, such as design thinking. In the short term, CIOs can make use of their IT consultants, contractors, and outsourcing services to help bridge the knowledge gap. But this will not last if CIOs expect their team to grow at the desired pace in an effort to stay competitive with other organizations. CIOs should work with members of HR to develop training programs, such as reverse mentoring. This tactic pairs a younger employee with one of more esteem so the younger one gains pertinent knowledge and skills, while the older one can learn a thing or two about the latest technological innovations.

To win in the long run, smart CIOs are investing in venture investors because they do not wish to sit around and wait for existing suppliers to build digital capabilities. CIOs identify small technology startups and invest in them. They watch them grow, and when the time is just right, they integrate them into their organization. This takes a lot of skill to monitor the startup and execute the plan at precisely the correct time.
