Brian Scudamore, founder of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and more recently WOW 1 DAY PAINTING, knows a thing or two about branding. In an article for Forbes, he shares his four biggest insights for building a brand that sticks.
The first tip is that the name is critically important. “WOW 1 DAY PAINTING” tells you exactly what to expect—you will be wowed with the fact that your house was painted in one day. Its name was originally “1-888-WOW1DAY! Painting” though, a hideous mouthful that is difficult to even read. Thus, be bold, but be succinct too. The second tip is to crowdsource your feedback. Scudamore asked everyone he could for feedback when rebranding his painting business. Positive and negative patterns are likely to emerge from such a wealth of feedback, which you can then act on to improve the brand. Scudamore’s third tip is to invest to get what you expect, particularly with logos. A great logo demands you invest in experts and that you go through as many iterations as possible to develop the perfect image for the business. The final tip then is to go for emotional impact. Your brand should use color and texture with purpose to incite specific thoughts and actions.
