The future is a wild place when you are brave enough to stick it out. In a post for Voices on Project Management, Kevin Korterud makes four big predictions about the project management office (PMO) of 2025. The trends that challenge PMOs today, such as more complex projects, widely dispersed workforces, and skill shortages, will only intensify tomorrow. Here’s how the PMO might respond:
In the future, anticipate the possibility of what Korterud calls the Mega-PMO. This management behemoth would expand beyond the role of the enterprise PMO to encompass tactical and operational services. The centralized command structure ensures that risk is confronted and delivery expedited.
Within the Mega-PMO there might be a partition that addresses the tactical, strategic, and operational needs by servicing in a three-part fashion. One example might be the creation of a specialized function staffed with highly skilled workers to administer activities like work plan updates, status report production, and financial tracking.
Unified Project Manager
Continuing with the theme of centralization, a unified project manager would do much to harmonize various activities throughout the organization. Oversight of programs would happen at the level of the organization, with all program managers in collaboration and sharing their skills.
Master Control Room
To top off this consolidated vision of the future is the master control room, the literal creation of a single PMO that ties together the previously mentioned changes. This control room might resemble that of a manufacturing control room, replete with display screens and incident resolution rooms, all with a consistent representation of status and an overall cushion of technology to buoy success.
