The Top 10 Technology Trends for 2014

What changes can we expect in the IT world in 2014? Just ask research firms Gartner, IDC, and Forrester. Dawn Kawamoto reports their top 10 answers.

Mobile applications was number one on Gartner and Forrester’s lists, but fell to fifth for IDC, who is most concerned with the trend of emerging markets. Other common trends between all three include broadband data, platforms as a service, and data-optimized cloud platforms.

What’s another major trend? The movement of everything to the internet, which shows up at number nine on Gartner and IDC’s charts, but maintains a strong presence nonetheless. Gartner even makes a nod to 3-D printing coming in at number 10 on its list, while IDC and Forrester reserve that spot for social technologies. Take a look at all three lists in Kawamoto’s original article. Did these three researchers leave anything out? Only 2014 will tell.
