The Responsiveness Trap

Do you pride yourself on answering emails immediately after receiving them? Sleeping next to your cell phone in case something — anything — happens? This post by Sarah Green has a piece of advice for you: knock it off! Her argument: by responding immediately to emails, for instance, you’re destroying the whole point of asynchronous communication. By responding immediately, you’re mimicking real-time communication without any of the benefits, leading to a lack of thought out responses, absorption of information, and overall, worse communication.
