Important Business Skills for New Graduates

In college, hard work takes the forms of cramming and writing papers, mostly. In the real world, hard work takes a hundred different forms, so you had best start sharpening your axe now, kid! In an article for Monster, Daniel Bortz discusses a few sets of skills new graduates should develop:

The Real World

Negotiation may not necessarily be a skill you use in the office every day (aside from negotiating with lines of code to please work this time), but it is something that comes into play during the actual job hiring process. You want to negotiate for the best salary and/or benefits you can. To do this, research what jobs of the same caliber are offering and make that your baseline during negotiations.

Speaking of research, the ability to research is also a handy career skill. If you are subscribing to relevant publications in your field, or joining related groups or following social media, what you are doing is keeping your knowledge of the industry current. And in IT, staying current is a perpetual challenge, so research is even more important to you.

Public speaking skills are another set of skills that sometimes elude tech workers, for various reasons. But an ability to speak clearly and confidently goes a long way, and it presents you as a person of high competence. So any time that you are given the opportunity to make a presentation, give it your all and view it as valuable practice. This is your chance to shine; have confidence in what you have to say.

Lastly, time management, teamwork, and people skills all kind of bundle together as important life skills in general. If you develop these skills, you will be viewed as likeable and reliable. If you do not develop these skills, you will be viewed as that person that everyone else is really hoping will find a new job.
