The CIO is the leader of the IT department, and ultimately, they set the tone for what is deemed acceptable behavior. If they want to keep their star ship sailing smoothly, then there a few behaviors they must eradicate from their office. Most people are quick to say they are an honest person–too quick. Unfortunately, dishonesty is more of a reality than anyone would like to admit. If there are members of IT who are not being honest, do they really need to be there? Their disingenuous actions can ultimately harm everyone else’s motivation.
When employees are not challenged, and consequently bored, they will be less than productive. Employees who take initiative and are constantly exploring new avenues are the ones who will make IT a force to be reckoned with. The last thing a CIO wants is to have a team that accepts mediocrity. “Good enough” should never be accepted, because IT is the heart of innovation and at the front in the exploration of new ideas. Mediocrity can additionally harm the overall value of IT, exuding a negative vibe.
Speaking of which, IT should be a place to try new things and not a place of negativity. The team will never know if something will actually work well until they try it, so do away with the pessimistic attitudes.
Some people are simply toxic by nature, and they poison everything they touch. This type of member negatively impacts the rest of the team because no one will willingly want to work with them. The bottom line is that these people cannot be a part of a productive department.
The CIO is the one with all the power to influence the department. CIOs should take it upon themselves to be aware of their team, and learn to watch and be rid of these bad behaviors.
