6 Pressing Reasons Your CIO Needs to Be on the Board

CIOs are increasingly joining the board at organizations, and rightfully so. A both technical and strategic eye for technology is invaluable in furthering the business’s interests. But if your CIO is not part of the board yet, it is time to start making a case for it. In a post for ITSM.tools, Dan McCarthy touches upon six reasons why they should invite the CIO:

  1. Competitive advantage
  2. IT-led innovation
  3. Cloud economics
  4. Digital transformation
  5. Transferable skills
  6. Digital security

Onboarding

You already know how the CIO factors into digital transformation. You know how the CIO can be an important force in cybersecurity too. And it makes perfect sense to involve the CIO in working out the best deals on cloud implementation. If these reasons seem so obvious to us, it should not be that excruciatingly hard to convey to others.

Regarding transferrable skills, McCarthy finds that CIOs have a whole host of abilities that could be applied in other aspects of business, including these things: knowledge management, continual improvement, risk management, and generally managing services.

And about the innovation that IT is poised to deliver, McCarthy uses the gains Intel has been making as an example:

  • US$ 656 million in business value from predictive analytics across Intel’s sales, supply chain, factory, and manufacturing operations worldwide
  • A 39-week improvement in bringing Intel products to market thanks to a machine-learning platform

The danger is that non-IT businesses may not recognize that these kinds of technology-led improvements can drive efficiency, cost reduction, and speed to market in all kinds of business scenarios. And not having a CIO on the board is only going to increase the likelihood of passing up these kinds of opportunities.

Make it apparent how much the CIO matters to doing great business.
