You deal with stakeholders on a daily basis through a variety of means. Have you ever tried blogging at them though? The idea actually holds a lot of merit. In a post at the Project Risk Coach, Harry Hall discusses how you can set up a useful internal blog that engages stakeholders.
For the Self-Centered Projects
Hall has used internal blogs as a mode of “pull communication” with stakeholders when implementing enterprise programs such as a PMO. Here is how he defines an internal blog:
An internal organization or company blog is a regularly updated website or web page that is written in an informal or conversational style. An individual or a small group may run the blog. Blogs are a great way to share internal news and knowledge, improve company and team communication, and inspire stakeholders.
Basically, the value of a blog is that it provides free, immediate information for anyone who would like to have it (hence “pull communication”). For instance, the project sponsor could write a post outlining the project’s vision. Or if a project is introducing something really new into the business, then the blog can become an education tool on the new principles that stakeholders must learn. Hall notes that you could even conduct polls and surveys through a blog to gather fast feedback. In all of these cases, a blog provides relevant, timely information.
The specific frequency of posts or type of content contained in posts is up to you. What ultimately matters is that you are providing stakeholders with all the information they need in a digestible format. And even following the conclusion of the project, you may want to keep the blog around, because it could be a great source of assistance to the operations team that inherits the project deliverables.
