3 Tips to Improve the Performance of Your Project Teams

Forming a project team is a tricky task even with all skilled members. Just like a baseball team or a music band, the team can be rocky and clashing in dynamics with members coming from different backgrounds and having different personalities. The Project Risk Coach Harry Hall says that creating a team has never been more challenging, as people don’t stay with the same organizations for long, or team members may live in distant parts of the world, and there are differences in culture, beliefs, and habits. So how can we create teams and improve performance? Hall offers three suggestions:

  1. Get the right people.
  2. Enhance the team competencies.
  3. Improve the interactions.

A Team Is like a Jigsaw Puzzle

Life is a series of picking teammates, from the playground to youth sports, study groups, and then business projects. It can be a torturing or pleasant experience; the question is who you choose to work with. As the key is the people, don’t just pick the best or most talented one out there—your intelligence may match, but your personality may not. Consider other qualities such as respect, positive attitude, self-motivation, and effective communication. It’s all about who you are able to produce the best work with.

Whether you pick outstanding talents or employees who are less popular in your organization, everyone can improve in terms of competency. Try to understand each individual, assess his or her performance, and execute a plan for further training or workshop. If your team is not doing well on an area, you can use the workshop to teach, explain, analyze, and help them practice. Don’t resort to blaming or giving destructive feedback, which only creates serious tension and exacerbates the relationship.

In addition, everyday communication within your team can be a difficult math formula. Some prefer indirect methods such as emails or text messages, while others are more comfortable with one-on-one conversations and meetings. You can shoot for balance in interactions within your team. Encourage others to collaborate and work efficiently by facilitating team discussions, problem-solving, and brainstorming exercises.
