There will be times when a team gets assembled fast and is expected to product results just as quickly. In such situations, it would benefit the team to build rapport sooner than later. Leigh Espy shares some ideas for icebreakers in a post for Project Bliss.
She starts with a few tips that are particularly useful for distributed teams. These include emailing the team a fun question and asking everyone to “reply all,” questions like, “If you could vacation anywhere, where would you go?” A more informal option is to just open video conferences with some casual chit chat, letting people goof on each other a little. And a third, somewhat creative option is to ask everyone to take a picture of an object in their workspace. Some fun conversation might ensue from a photo of family or (better) an action figure.
Then there are icebreakers that work for any team. Managers could ask the team what they have been reading lately. Or they could ask team members what the worst job they ever had was, which is bound to inspire lively discussion (and maybe provide clues to the manager on practices to avoid). If the team is up for playing a quick game, they can play this:
Who Done It. Ask each player to write a fact about themselves that others don’t yet know on a notecard. The facilitator collects the cards and either passes them out to be read aloud individually by each team member or reads them aloud herself. As you get to each card, the team must guess which participant wrote the fact. To play the game remotely, have the team members email a fact about themselves, and the facilitator will read each while the team guesses.
