Most of the major business challenges these days are technology problems. Even the old problems are becoming technology problems as digital solutions arrive. CEOs should thus rely on their CIOs to help identify operational knowledge gaps. In an article for Forbes, Omer Trajman shares three questions CEOs should ask their CIOs:
- Are you thinking holistically?
- Do you know our business technology pain points?
- Are you focused on the future?

The CIO, in addition to other executives, must think of the business as a single organism. A big part of IT is managing networks and applications, yes, but it must be realized how IT’s activities affect other departments and vice versa. In other words, the only silo that the business can afford is the silo that encompasses the whole business.
About the second question, Trajman says this:
Make sure your CIO comes to every executive and board meeting equipped to discuss 3 Ps: past, present and prediction. Know how technology has been supporting the business, the current state of effectiveness and efficiency as of right now, and what the business should expect to change in the coming weeks and months. CIOs are used to getting regular reports of all the tickets and outstanding issues. Preparing a historical view means showing how the IT infrastructure performed comprehensively, not just discussing specific issues.
Trajman believes the CIO should be looking ahead at least two years, since the speed at which technology evolves compared to business practices is so vast. CIOs need to always be making small improvements that quietly add up to preparing the business for the next big thing. Likewise, the business should be providing feedback and helping the CIO to address which technology opportunities are most pressing.
