There is “more than one way to skin a cat,” and the cat is you when it comes to negative emotions. In an article for Medical Daily, Lecia Bushak examines what happens to you when succumb to specific bad feelings. Maybe this will convince you to calm down.
For starters, there is anger. Anger inspires a surge of chemicals that can result in heart attacks and general cardiovascular problems (the threat of which increases over time). It also impairs judgement (“blinding rage”). Sadness poses the same kinds of heart risks, but with less obstruction to judgement.
A third emotion is stress/anxiety. Stress causes headaches, exhaustion, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and compromised immune systems—among other things. It also intensifies other negative feelings felt, making stress the king of jerk feelings.
Next is shock trauma, the sensation of surprise over something unwanted. This can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder in extreme cases, or more generally to sleeping and eating problems. And lastly, there is loneliness, a negative feeling that is easy to forget exists until it strikes. Loneliness damages sleep quality, links with depression, and could increase chance of premature death by perhaps 14 percent.
