For starters, tell your current boss about your aspirations to become a manager. Next, build your skills at developing people by becoming a mentor for someone. Third, discuss with existing managers what skills have helped them to succeed and do what you can to fortify those skills in yourself. When you think you have grown an appreciable body of work with your employer, put together some hard data and make a formal case to your boss for why you are ready for management. And one more thing you should be doing, in general, is asking for feedback from supervisors and coworkers alike. Self-awareness is good and will help you to improve your case for a management position even better.
