Cloud Computing and the On-Demand Economy Are Remaking IT Careers

Gone are the days of a simple nine-to-five job with your one boss. Nowadays it is more common to see IT professionals working freelance, and working for a myriad of employers on a plethora of projects. In an article for ZDNet, Mark Samuels explores this changing employment environment.

Playing Gigs

Ade McCormack, independent consultant and author, believes that the world is moving into the “gig economy.” This simply means an increased amount of people working freelance. PwC has embraced this change by creating an online marketplace to help match freelancers to internal projects. These flexible approaches to employment will greatly benefit IT employers because they can then match the best people with the right jobs.

A move towards freelance coupled with the shift toward cloud computing will likely cause a drastic decrease in traditional full-time IT careers. Additionally, the traditional roles may evolve entirely into something such as business analyst. The role of CIO will need to be filled by someone with the capabilities and talents to manage such an array of people.

According to Airswift CIO Brad Dowden, “The lines between business and tech are blurring; a convergence of roles is taking place. However, people aren’t moving from business into technical roles as they don’t have the required experience.” It remains a rarity to see a business partner transition into the IT sector, but it is not unheard of. The big players in IT will still play a pertinent role in business decisions because technology is such a vital facet of the business world today.

IT has evolved from a purely technical department into one that demands talented individuals with people skills. IT collaborations are becoming more common because they interact with the rest of the business in great perpetuity, making communication skills evermore necessary.
