Top Five Skill Areas for a Project Coordinator

A project coordinator can wear an array of hats depending upon what the project demands of them. They can be supporting the project and the project manager, or they can be something more along the lines of an assistant. In a post for the PM Perspectives Blog, Lindsay Scott explores the attributes that enable a project coordinator to sparkle at their position. There are five skill areas successful project coordinators are competent in:

  1. The coordination of tasks
  2. Planning
  3. Wider array of project management skills
  4. Third party interactions
  5. The central facilitator

Attention to Detail

The project coordinator’s main objective is to (of course) coordinate tasks and ensure that the job gets done. In order to successfully do this, they need to be able to coordinate people and their time, skills, and activities. Organization is essential. Project coordinators need to understand and appreciate the important art of planning, which goes hand-in-hand with coordination. When things are planned better, tasks tend to run more smoothly and everything gets done on time and budget.

Project coordinators need to be just as knowledgeable as a project manager when it comes to project management techniques. They should understand the fundamentals, such as: risk management, budgeting, resource management, change control, and quality. Additionally, a project coordinator is able to adapt these techniques so they work better on smaller projects.

Project coordinators are going to have a greater amount of interaction with third-party suppliers, and they need to understand how best to communicate with them. Experienced project coordinators will have the authority levels to sign necessary contracts and approve the work without the intervention of someone higher up.

The project coordinator brings all of the skills together and recognizes that they are the central point of contact for a multitude of people. They are the central hub of communication for a project, and they need to be able to successfully communicate with all levels of people, from stakeholders to customers.
