How to Pass the ITIL Intermediate Exams

Knowing something in theory is relatively simply, but being tested on your understanding on the material is an entirely different game. ITIL has a plethora of theories that back its practices, but understanding them is not the sole golden ticket you will need to pass your exams. In a post for Valorize IT, the other tricks to passing ITIL exams are revealed.

Making the Grade

Having an understanding of all the ITIL theories, the larger picture, and the basics of each process is what the course itself is all about. Additionally, it is often helpful if you actually do these things and put them into practice.

The exam itself is rather grueling. It is a multiple-choice test in which only one answer is wrong and the others are essentially “right,” with one being most right. Learning how to spot the two answers that are correct right off the bat can help guide you and help to avoid any silly mistakes. Take advantage of the practice exams and use them to help dictate the areas in which you need to study. The first time around, simply take the exam and see how you do. While familiarizing yourself with what is expected, you will also determine where your weaknesses are.

When taking the second attempt, follow these tips:

  1. Plan your time.
  2. Comprehend the question in its entirety.
  3. Spot the “distracter.”
  4. Learn the differences.
  5. Choose carefully.

You are working within a time limit for your exam and it is critical that you become comfortable with it. It may be stressful, but time management is a crucial skill to possess. While you are reading the question, make certain you have read it and understand it fully. It will be next to impossible to answer the question accurately if you do not understand what you need to be answering.

Within the answer choices, there may be an option set up to merely distract you and throw you off your game. Learning to pick this answer out will immediately eliminate that choice from the realm of possibility. With the remaining three choices, learn how to pick out the differences. Training your brain to be able to pick out these differences can help you to immediately increase your score.

You should now be down to two answers. There is not necessarily a “trick” to figuring out which one is correct; it all boils down to your practice. This is where understanding the materials, studying, and practicing will come to fruition. Finally, always answer the question, even if you do not know the answer. Leaving an answer blank leaves a 0% chance of getting it right, so just guess!
