9 Common Habits of Successful CIOs

CIOs are under a great deal of pressure to constantly be at the top of their game. So what is the secret of the great CIOs? In an article for InformationWeek, Jessica Davis uncovers the little behaviors that make a big impact. There are nine habits of successful CIOs:

  2. Take care of relationships.

There are a plethora of successful people who begin their day early. They elect to wake up early to get work done before their day and meetings commence. They balance this by not working at night.

CIOs have a great number of relationships with a variety of people. They need their IT team, suppliers, and customers. By taking an interest in these relationships, and more importantly people, CIOs are ensuring team involvement and success. Making new friends can go a long ways in furthering your career. Business is about networking. CIOs who have contacts can better form alliances and get their agenda accomplished.

The best CIOs are handling the bimodal IT environment by learning to collaborate. They may end up interacting with an array of stakeholders both inside and outside the organization. Collaboration helps to encourage this.

Commutes may seem like a waste of precious time, but they can be utilized for personal or business affairs. Perhaps the drive home is the perfect time to conduct a conference call.

Credibility and courage are capabilities or skills of a successful CIO. A CIO needs credibility in order to be trusted and courage to minimize problems as they arise. Finding a partner that will push your way of thinking will make a CIO better. Vendor relationships are an opportunity to expand knowledge of the industry.

Great skills are only one aspect of an extraordinary employee. Employees need opportunities that challenge them so they can thrive. Highlight these opportunities when hiring. And lastly, maps of the business process or technology help to paint a vivid picture of how the organization works.
